Every eligible South Australian home can get around 30% off a new battery through the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, taken off the installer's invoice. Priority households can add an SA REPS payment for joining a Virtual Power Plant, and homes in the City of Adelaide can add a council rebate on top. The one thing that has ended is the old state-run Home Battery Scheme from 2018; the federal discount has taken its place and is worth more for most homes.
What battery support may be available in SA now
Even though the old Home Battery Scheme has closed, South Australian households may still access a combination of a state VPP incentive and the federal battery discount — and SA has some of the highest power prices in the country, so batteries tend to deliver strong value here.

REPS is not a fixed government rebate: energy retailers and accredited providers choose which activities they offer and at what value, so treat "up to $2,050" as a provider- and eligibility-dependent offer, not an entitlement. How the stack works
The federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount is the largest upfront saving for most households: roughly $2,500 on a 10 kWh battery and $3,400 on 13.5 kWh at current certificate prices. On top of that, joining an approved Virtual Power Plant through the Retailer Energy Productivity Scheme (REPS) may add an incentive, and homes in the City of Adelaide may qualify for a council rebate; see the dedicated Adelaide battery rebate guide for the council layer. Some VPP participants also receive a small annual bill credit.
REPS VPP incentive: who can get it right now
The REPS VPP activity pays a one-off amount when an eligible battery is connected to an approved VPP, scaled by battery capacity up to a cap. Retailers have an annual target, and in 2026 the general-household allocation was used up in May, so at the time of writing providers are accepting priority-group households only. The priority group generally includes holders of a Pensioner Concession Card, Health Care Card or Gold Repatriation Health Card, households receiving an SA Government energy concession or on a retailer hardship or payment plan, households referred by a SAFCA financial counsellor, and renters paying $500 a week or less. More general funding is expected with the new target year in early 2027. If you are not in the priority group, plan the purchase around the federal discount and treat any REPS payment as a bonus if it becomes available before you install.
Typically requires an SA property, an approved battery on the SA Power Networks list, a CEC-accredited installer, and (for the REPS incentive) joining an approved VPP with a provider that still has REPS allocation for your household type. The federal discount generally requires the battery to be paired with new or existing solar, 5 to 100 kWh, VPP-capable and installed by an accredited installer; it has no income test. Final eligibility depends on current scheme rules.
