How long should you run a pool pump?

The short answer: long enough to turn your pool over about once a day — roughly 6–8 hours in summer for a typical Sydney pool, less in winter. But when you run it, and what type of pump you have, changes the cost far more than the hours do.

The rule behind the hours: one turnover a day

Pool pumps are not sized by hours, they are sized by turnover — moving a volume of water equal to the whole pool through the filter. For a domestic pool, filtering roughly one full turnover a day keeps the water clear in normal conditions. That means the right number of hours depends on your pool’s size and your pump’s flow rate, not on a number someone gave you when the pool was built.

The best time of day to run a pool pump

For most households, daytime — and the reason is chemistry rather than electricity. Sunlight is when algae grows fastest and when chlorine is working hardest (and burning off quickest). Filtering and circulating while the sun is on the water does more useful work per hour than the same hours run overnight.

Three situations change the answer:

  • You have solar panels. Run the pump in the middle of the day, roughly 9am–3pm. A variable-speed pump at low speed draws a couple of hundred watts — comfortably inside what a rooftop system generates — so most of your filtration effectively runs on sunshine instead of grid power.
  • You are on a time-of-use tariff. Peak periods in NSW are typically late afternoon and early evening. Shifting the pump out of that window is usually worth more than shortening it.
  • Your pump is noisy or close to a neighbour. Older single-speed pumps run at one loud speed. Daytime running avoids complaints; a variable-speed pump at filtration speed is quiet enough that most households stop noticing it.

Should you run a pool pump at night?

It can suit an off-peak tariff, but it is generally the less effective option for water quality, and in some areas noise rules apply after hours. A common compromise is a longer daytime block for filtration plus a short overnight block if your tariff genuinely rewards it. If your pump is loud enough that night running is out of the question, that is usually a sign of an ageing single-speed motor rather than a scheduling problem.

Why variable-speed pumps change the answer entirely

With an old single-speed pump, every hour costs the same and the only lever you have is fewer hours — which trades water quality for money. Variable-speed pumps break that trade-off, because power use rises steeply with speed. Roughly speaking, halving the speed of a pump cuts its power draw to a small fraction of what it was, while still moving a useful amount of water.

The practical result is counter-intuitive: a variable-speed pump usually runs more hours than the pump it replaced, moves the same water, is quieter, and still uses far less electricity. Longer and slower beats shorter and harder.

Timer settings that actually work

Two schedules that suit most Australian pools:

  • Solar household, variable-speed: one low-speed block from about 9am to 3pm, plus a short higher-speed burst for the cleaner or after heavy use. Most of the year the pool essentially filters on generated power.
  • No solar, single-speed: one block starting mid-morning and finishing before the late-afternoon peak. Split it into two shorter blocks if your pool gets heavy leaf fall — circulation spread across the day handles debris better than one long run.

Whatever you set, adjust it twice a year rather than once: pools need materially fewer hours between about May and August, and many households simply never turn theirs down.

Are you running yours too long?

A simple test: if the water is consistently clear, the chlorine level holds, and filter pressure is normal, cut the run time by 30–60 minutes and watch the pool for a week. If nothing changes, keep the shorter schedule and repeat. If the water clouds or chlorine will not hold, go back up — and check the filter before adding more hours, since a filter overdue for a clean or a backwash makes every hour less effective.
